Scagliola Slate Top and Wrought Iron Table, Sicily, 19th Century
A very beautiful Sicilian slate top table with scagliola décor of acanthus leaves, fruit baskets, swags and floral wreaths, in lovely colors. The top is supported by a heavy wrought iron base with stretcher, painted a glossy black, with orange primer slightly visible beneath. The base was most likely made later, when the original base would have needed replacing (circa 1920s). The scagliola décor is largely missing, revealing the carvings in the slate. We have chosen to leave it this way, which we find rather beautiful. It would be possible to have it restored if desired.
